Congratulations to my incredibly smart, hardworking, and brilliant cousin Alyssa for graduating earlier today. She was in the top 5% of her class, how exciting!
I drew this card during the ceremony, then fixed up the details when I got home. I unfortunately left most of my art supplies back in LA so I used any available highlighters, Sharpie pens, and some strewn stubby colored pencils for the color. Will have everyone sign it during tonight’s family dinner.
Here’s the initial sketch of it. And if you’re wondering, yes! I did have a lot of fun making the hair curls.
Thank you for letting me photograph you during the event and for exclaiming “that’s so sick!” upon seeing some of my art.
EDIT. Woke up today hating the original drawing so I redid the image. Much better now, imo.
Took a few pictures of my eyes in various emotive poses. One with color, one without.
I was coincidentally listening to Fetty Wap’s mixtape while I was drawing and the irony JUST occurred to me right after I finished coloring.
Self-crit: Need to practice drawing eyebrow shapes more.
Two of the many, many selfies I’ve been snapping for drawing references. I can’t quite explain why. I just wanted to.
Thank you to Arun from my writing group for letting me do an impromptu photo sesh with you when we met up for coffee on Sunday.
Arun was really fun to illustrate! I never attempted to draw anyone with hair as curly as his so that was an interesting process. He was also a great model — I think he’s used to being someone’s muse — who barely flinched and even played along when he heard/saw me snapping away hazy iPhone pics.
I drew him using a lead pencil then scanned in his sketch. I fixed up a few strange parts of the drawing on Adobe Photoshop Elements, like adjusting his mouth line and shrinking his right eye pupil. I also colored it a bit using this method.
UPDATED. Colored the first one much like the rest.
More under the cut.
